Parents of Kindergarten and First Grade Students: Your child will visit the library each week. Kindergarten and first grade students are allowed to check out one book at a time. To ensure that your child is able to check out a book, please help him or her remember to return his or her book each week. Library classes are on Mondays or Thursdays.
Parents of Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade Students: Your child will visit the library each week. 2nd-5th grade students are allowed to check out two books at a time. To ensure that your child is able to check out new books, please help him or her remember to return or renew his or her books each week. Library classes are on Mondays or Thursdays.

Accelerated Reader (AR)
South Hancock Elementary uses the Accelerated Reader (AR) program to encourage our students to read. If you have questions about the program, please feel free to contact your child's teacher or the librarian. AR tests can be taken during school hours.
Want To See Your Child's Progress?
Use Accelerated Reader Home Connect. Click on the following link and sign in with your student's login information.
You can see what books your student has tested on, what the student scored on each test, and how close or far your student is from his or her goal.
Your student's log in should be the graduation year, first initial, and last name. (Example: 30revans)
Your student's password is the last five digits of his or her student ID, which is typically the student's lunch number.

Looking for Ways to Encourage Your Child to Read?
1. Let your child see YOU reading! Children imitate what they see.
2. Help your child find things to read that suit his or her interests.
3. Offer other special incentives to encourage your child's reading. Allow them to stay up an extra 15 minutes to finish a chapter. Promise to take your child to see a movie after he or she has finished the book on which it was based.
4. Limit your children's TV viewing and computer use in an effort to make time for other activities, such as reading.
5. Have older siblings read to younger siblings. Children often enjoy sharing their expertise to an admiring audience.
6. Schedule a family reading time.
7. Play reading-related games.
8. Take your children to the public library regularly.
9. Read with a purpose.
10. Read aloud to your child, especially a child who is discouraged by his or her own poor reading skills. The pleasure of listening to you read, rather than struggling alone, may restore your child's initial enthusiasm for books and reading.

Encourage your child to take care of his or her library books. Remind them to keep their books in a safe place.
